Everyone shops doors. Almost nobody asks about the box behind them, which is the part that decides whether the kitchen lasts fifteen years or thirty five.
What each one is
Plywood is thin layers of wood veneer glued in alternating grain directions. Because each ply runs at right angles to its neighbours, the layers physically restrain each other from moving. That cross lamination is the whole point.
Particleboard is wood chips and sawdust bound with resin and compressed into a panel. It is uniform, flat, inexpensive, and holds a laminate face beautifully. It has no internal structure resisting movement.
MDF sits between them: finer fibres, denser, smoother. Excellent for painted door panels, as covered in our Central Valley materials guide, but heavy and not typically the best carcass choice.
The comparison that matters

Water is the decider, and this climate hides it
Here is the mechanism that matters. When water reaches a particleboard core, the compressed fibres absorb it and expand. When it dries out, they do not return to their original dimension. The panel is permanently thicker, softer, and structurally compromised. There is no repair; the cabinet is replaced.
Plywood behaves differently. Its plies may separate slightly at an exposed edge, but the panel keeps its shape and its structural integrity, and it usually survives the event.
Why this bites harder in Clovis than the national guides suggest. Summer air here is extremely dry. A slow supply line drip under a sink evaporates off the visible surface almost as fast as it appears, so the usual warning signs, a damp patch or a musty smell, never show up. Meanwhile the core keeps wicking. The first symptom many homeowners get is the cabinet bottom giving way under a bottle of dish soap, by which point the damage has been progressing for months.
What the upgrade actually costs
Plywood carcasses typically add somewhere in the region of 10 to 20 percent to the cabinetry portion of a project. On a $15,000 kitchen that is roughly $1,500 to $3,000.
Set against a service life difference of 25 to 40 years versus 10 to 20, it is one of the better value decisions available in a kitchen. It is also the least visible, which is exactly why it is the first thing cut when a bidder is trying to win on price.
Where it matters most
If budget forces a compromise, prioritise plywood in this order:
- The sink base. Non negotiable. This is where kitchens die
- The dishwasher run, which sees steam and the occasional leak
- Any base cabinet, since spills reach the floor
- Bathroom and laundry cabinetry, for the same reasons
- Garage cabinetry, where fog season damp and 100 degree summers cycle the panel every year. See our garage guide

Is particleboard ever the right choice?
Yes, in specific places, and it is worth being fair about it:
- Adjustable interior shelving in dry upper cabinets, provided spans are kept short
- Rental properties where replacement on a cycle is the plan anyway
- Cabinet backs in dry locations
- Laminate faced casework in commercial interiors away from water
What it should not be is the carcass of a base cabinet holding a sink in a house you intend to keep.
How to check what you already have
Open a cabinet door and look at the exposed edge of the box, usually visible at the front where the face frame meets the carcass, or on the underside of a shelf.
- Plywood shows distinct thin layers, like a very fine sandwich
- Particleboard shows a uniform speckled texture of chips and resin
- MDF shows a smooth, dense, uniform edge with no visible chips or layers

Not all plywood is the same
If a bidder says plywood, there is a follow up question worth asking, because the term covers a wide range.
Ply count matters. A three quarter inch panel might be seven plies or nine. More plies means thinner individual layers, better stability, and a cleaner edge. Cabinet grade plywood is typically seven ply or better at that thickness.
Core material matters more. Veneer core is the traditional construction and the strongest for screw holding. Some panels sold as plywood have a particleboard or MDF core with only a thin veneer face, which looks like plywood on the outside and behaves like the core on the inside. Ask specifically.
Face grade affects appearance rather than performance, and matters mainly on the interiors you will actually see when a door is open.
A fair question to any bidder: "what ply count and core, and is the interior prefinished?" A shop that knows its panel stock answers immediately.
Where thickness matters most
Shelving is where the material difference becomes visible fastest, and it has a specific threshold.
Three quarter inch shelving deflects visibly under a loaded span beyond roughly 32 inches, and once that sag sets it does not recover. Particleboard shelving deflects sooner and further than plywood at the same thickness, which is why sagging shelves are so common in older builder grade kitchens.
The fixes are the same in either material: keep spans under about 32 inches by adding a vertical divider, thicken the shelf, or let a steel stiffener into the underside. What you should not do is accept a five foot particleboard shelf and plan to put dinnerware on it.
This applies equally to pantry shelving, where the load is heavier than people estimate. A run of tinned goods across a wide shelf is a substantial weight, and it is a common place to find a sagging shelf in a Clovis pantry.
