If your kitchen was built before about 1990, there is probably a boxed bulkhead running above your upper cabinets. It is called a soffit, and in most Clovis kitchens it is the single largest block of wasted space in the room.
What a soffit is and why it exists
A soffit is a framed and drywalled box spanning the gap between the top of the wall cabinets and the ceiling. They became standard for three practical reasons: standard cabinets were 30 inches tall and ceilings were 96 inches, leaving an awkward gap; the gap collected dust nobody wanted to clean; and it was a convenient place to run ducting, wiring, and plumbing.
The first two reasons no longer apply, because cabinets can be built to any height. The third still might, which is the whole question.
What you actually gain
Removing a soffit typically frees twelve to eighteen inches of vertical space, which converts to a full additional shelf across every upper run in the kitchen. On a kitchen with 14 feet of upper cabinets, that is a meaningful amount of storage in a part of the room currently holding nothing.
The visual effect is larger than the storage gain. Cabinets running to the ceiling draw the eye up and make an eight foot ceiling read taller. A soffit does the opposite: it caps the room and emphasises how low the ceiling is.
What it costs

The demolition itself is cheap. The cost lands in the cabinetry, because uppers built to reach a 96 or 108 inch ceiling are not a catalogue size. This is one of the clearest cases where custom rather than semi-custom earns its premium: a catalogue line will get you to the standard height and leave a filler panel above.
What is usually hiding inside
This is the question that decides whether the project is simple or not, and it varies by housing era:
- Kitchen exhaust ducting. The most common find. A range hood vent frequently runs horizontally through the soffit to an exterior wall
- HVAC ducting. In mid century tract housing across Clovis, Selma, and the surrounding valley towns, supply runs regularly cross the kitchen inside the soffit
- Electrical. Usually relocatable without much difficulty
- Plumbing vent stack. The most expensive find, since vents have limited routing options
- Nothing at all. Genuinely common in newer construction, where the soffit was purely cosmetic
Insist this is checked during design, not during demolition. A small inspection opening cut into the soffit at drawing stage costs almost nothing and tells you exactly what you are dealing with. Discovering a duct run after the kitchen is already open turns a clean project into a change order, and by then you have no leverage and no choice.
When it is worth doing
- The soffit is empty, or contains only relocatable electrical
- You are replacing the cabinetry anyway, so taller uppers are a specification change rather than a separate project
- Your kitchen is short on storage, which describes most pre-1990 Clovis kitchens
- Ceilings are 8 feet and the room feels low
When to leave it alone
- A plumbing vent stack runs through it. Rerouting a vent is disproportionately expensive relative to the storage gained
- You are refacing rather than replacing. Refacing keeps your existing boxes, and those boxes are the old height. Removing the soffit would leave a gap above them
- Ceilings are already 9 feet or higher. Cabinets to a 10 foot ceiling produce storage nobody can reach without a ladder. In that case a soffit or a deliberate open gap with trim can be the better design
- Budget is tight and the kitchen is otherwise fine. This is a storage and aesthetics upgrade, not a repair
If you cannot remove it
You are not stuck. Options that work:
- Cabinets built up to the soffit rather than stopping short, closing the dust gap and gaining a few inches
- Panel the soffit face in the same finish as the cabinetry, so it reads as part of the run rather than as a leftover box
- Put the storage elsewhere. A tall pantry run frequently recovers more usable space than the soffit would, and everything in it is reachable. Our small kitchen storage guide covers the alternatives
One thing worth thinking about first
Storage above about 72 inches needs a step stool. Cabinets to a 96 inch ceiling give you a top shelf most adults cannot reach unaided.
That is fine, and it is still worth doing, provided you are honest about what goes up there: seasonal serving dishes, the turkey roaster, appliances used twice a year. It is excellent storage for things you rarely need. It is not additional daily storage, and anyone selling it to you as such is overstating it.

How to finish the top of the run
Once the soffit is gone you have a design decision at the ceiling, and it changes how deliberate the result looks.
Crown moulding closes the gap between the cabinet top and the ceiling and reads traditional. It also forgives an uneven ceiling, which matters in older Clovis homes where the ceiling is rarely dead flat across a run.
A flat filler or light rail gives a cleaner, more contemporary line. It is less forgiving of an uneven ceiling, so it needs a good scribe.
Running the cabinet box hard to the ceiling with no trim at all is the most modern option and the least forgiving of all. It looks superb when the ceiling cooperates and obviously wrong when it does not.
Ask your installer to check ceiling height at several points along the run before you choose. In a pre-1980 house it is common to find half an inch or more of variation, and that variation decides which of the three options will actually look right.
The upgrade to do at the same time
While the soffit is open, the wiring above your uppers is accessible in a way it will not be again without cutting drywall. This is the moment to add:
- Under cabinet lighting, which changes how a kitchen functions more than most people expect. Lit counters get used; counters in shadow become drop zones
- In cabinet lighting for any glass fronted uppers
- Additional outlets, since older Clovis kitchens are routinely short of them
- Improved ceiling lighting, because removing a soffit changes how light falls across the room
