- Inset versus overlay. Inset doors sit flush inside the face frame and carry a real premium, because the tolerances are far tighter and every reveal has to be consistent.
- Wood species. Paint grade maple and alder sit at the bottom. Rift white oak and walnut sit at the top, and the gap between them is substantial.
- Interior fittings. Roll out shelves, tray dividers, spice pullouts, waste and recycling pullouts, and drawer organisers are priced per unit and add up quickly.
- Box construction. Three quarter inch plywood carcasses cost more than particleboard and are worth it, for reasons covered in our plywood versus particleboard guide.
- Site conditions. Out of square walls, a soffit that has to come out, or plumbing and electrical that needs relocating all add labour.
What is usually not included
Cabinetry quotes commonly exclude these, and each one is a real line in your overall budget:
- Countertops. Quoted separately and templated after the boxes are set and levelled
- Appliances
- Flooring
- Backsplash tile
- Electrical and plumbing changes, if the layout moves anything
- Drywall repair after a soffit removal
Industry cost breakdowns generally put cabinets and their installation at roughly a quarter to a third of a full kitchen remodel budget. If your cabinetry quote is $18,000 and you are doing a full remodel, budgeting somewhere near $50,000 overall is a more realistic starting point than $20,000.
Does the money come back?
For kitchen work specifically, the data is unusually favourable to California. Remodeling's 2025 Cost vs. Value research found that a minor kitchen remodel in the Pacific region recouped 129 percent of its cost at resale, against an average project cost of $29,728 and an average recouped value of $38,384. Nationally the same project returned about 112.9 percent, the best return of any interior improvement in the report.
Two caveats worth stating plainly. That figure is for a minor remodel, meaning you keep the footprint and spend on surfaces, cabinetry, and hardware. Major kitchen remodels that move walls and plumbing recoup a considerably smaller share. And resale value is not the same as money in your pocket today. But if you were worried that spending on cabinetry is money thrown away in this market, the evidence says otherwise.
How to get a number you can rely on
Any figure quoted before someone measures your kitchen is a planning range, including every number on this page. A real quote follows a field measure, because the difference between a drawing dimension and the actual wall is exactly where change orders come from.
When you do get quotes, ask each bidder the same four questions: what grade of box construction are you supplying, is installation included, what is the written lead time, and what happens if the walls turn out to be out of square. The answers separate shops fast.

Deposits, payment schedules, and your legal protection
On a $15,000 to $20,000 purchase this matters as much as the price, and almost nobody mentions it. California law caps the down payment on a home improvement contract at $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, excluding finance charges. Most cabinetry projects fall between $8,000 and $40,000, which is not a number that comes out of savings in one piece for a lot of households. The practical result is that people either delay the work for years or scope it down to something that does not solve the problem.
Financing changes that calculation, and it is worth asking about specifics rather than accepting a monthly figure. Ask whether pre-qualification affects your credit, since many checks are soft and do not. Ask what the total cost of borrowing works out to across the full term, not just the monthly payment. Ask whether a promotional or deferred interest period applies and precisely what happens at the end of it. And ask about early payoff penalties.
